I recently got to enjoy a wonderful afternoon tea at the San Francisco Proper Hotel. I have been to this hotel once before to their stunning rooftop cocktail bar, so I was super excited when I found out they also served afternoon tea in their restaurant ‘Villon’.
Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco, you step into an oasis of calm filled with an eclectic mix of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern artwork and furniture.

It’s a really beautiful hotel inside with well thought out art pieces, you feel like you’re in a little museum.
Stepping through to Villon, you are greeted by your server and given the tea menu to look over. There is a good selection of teas all from a company called Leaves and Flowers, which I’ve enjoyed many times before. I chose the Deep Breakfast tea which was robust yet refreshing. When the tea arrives, the server will pour the first cup of tea for you into the teacup which is a really nice touch and makes it that extra special experience.

The Food
Next to arrive are the sandwiches. The flavours may change seasonally, but they are usually classic flavours that you would expect from an afternoon tea. My favourite that day was the Egg Mayo with a curried crust.

Scones and Sweets
The scones were very good, soft inside and crisp on the outside. They came with jam, lemon curd and clotted cream. The cakes were all really delicious and included macarons, cream puffs and mini tiramisus. My favourite was the tiramisu, it was really light and airy and not overly sickly.

Overall Experience
This was a really nice afternoon tea in the city, classic and elegant, what you'd expect from a hotel afternoon tea.
Price: This is priced at $45 which I think is very reasonably priced for a hotel afternoon tea with impeccable service. There is also the option to add a glass of sparkling wine.
Food: 9/10 - Everything was of excellent quality with really good flavours which all balanced nicely together. The only addition I would like to see is a couple of other savoury options to go with the sandwiches.
Service: 10/10 - Expect excellent service and made to feel extra special.
Atmosphere: 10/10 - Wonderful, classy restaurant. I loved the art deco inspired furnishings. It was really nice and refreshing from other hotels in the area.
Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think!
